School Resource Officer
Program
Tifton Police Department School Resource Program was formed in 1993
by Chief James Smith. The program began with two school resource
officers; Officer Toni Gann at the Tift County High School, and Sergeant
Lester Cromer at the Tift County Junior High School. The program
currently has four officers.
Sgt. Toni Gann, Sgt. Lester Cromer,
Officer Torrie Adams, and Officer Greg Daughtrey.
The goals of the School Resource Officers are:
1. To promote good citizenship among students, staff and law enforcement
officers.
2. Foster an attitude of respect for the personal property rights of
others.
3. Cultivate among students and staff members a sprit of law observance,
while safeguarding their moral and physical welfare.
4. Protect the physical property of the Tift County School Board of
Education.
The primary responsibilities of the School Resource Officers are:
1. To be an extension of the principal's office or any such duties
assigned by the principal or Chief of Police in order to maintain safety
and security of the school and campus.
2. To be a classroom source for law education and a resource for
students, parents and teachers.
3. On a daily basis, School Resource Officers monitor hallways,
restrooms, cafeteria and parking lots.
4. Supervise extracurricular activities and trips of students on school
related functions.
The School Resource Officer is not a school disciplinarian, but is
first and foremost a law enforcement officer and is to be notified in
the event of a state law or city ordinance violation. They may also be
notified upon any questions that one might have.
